Kenyan Protest in Front of Parliament

After years of the area near Kenya's national parliamentary building being off-limit to protesters, activists today helped set what they hope to be new precedent. Huge crowds gathered to protest a recently revealed government corruption scandal in which millions of dollars were stolen by different ministries. Because of the broadsweeping public outrage and the large turnout, nonviolent protesters were allowed to chant inside what has been designated the "government zone," a space off limits over the last few years. Many veteran activists at the rally today noted that government forces have been violently breaking up peaceful demonstrations before they could even enter the government zone.
